Think You Gotta Niche?
By Gigi Swanson

When Mike McLaughlin’s stepdaughter was getting married he couldn’t find a song to capture the right sentiment for their “special” dance at the reception. So he wrote one. Soon the Pennsylvania-based creator of Stepfather of the Bride was receiving requests for the song from DJ’s and other step dads putting in motion a unique niche opportunity.

Currently, McLaughlin’s CD Baby page gets 500- 800 hits per month from people searching for stepfather-oriented wedding songs. He has employed Web 2.0 communication strategies utilizing wedding forums and blogs, Yahoo answers, DJ forums, etc.

McLaughlin offers…”The key is to join the forum, but not to blatantly spam, or your post will be removed and you will be banned from the forum. Inclusion in these forum pages will also be returned in a search for your keywords, so if someone is searching your niche, they will likely find you in many places.”

McLaughlin has also seen increased exposure from others recommending his song from his participation in these sites. These additional links to his page from other sites further contribute to higher rankings in web search engines for his product. He also offers customized songs for weddings to further complement his niche. So far his song has been used in over 500 weddings across the US and Canada.
